Upgrade an Email Marketing installation from CRM 4 to CRM 2011

A short walk through for the upgrade from CRM 4 to CRM 2011.

A few pre-update hints:

  • In place upgrades are not supported at this time. You need to import the CRM 4 organization into a new environment as recommended in the CRM 2011 deployment guide.
  • Do not uninstall E-Mail Marketing in the old environment. Simply leave everything as it is.
  • Do not try to remove any customizations that E-Mail Marketing installed in the organization. Keep the Email Reactions entity, ISV customizations, Workflow DLLs and Plugins.

When you have successfully upgraded your organization into the new environment and just before the E-Mail Marketing installation:

  • Make sure you have Deployment Administrator privileges in the new environment
  • Move the _EmailMarketing databases to the new SQL server
  • Verify that the application pool account of CRM 2011 can access the EmailMarketing database (needs datareader and datawriter permissions)
    • In a 'SQL server and CRM on one machine', this would be NETWORK SERVICE
    • In a two or more machine configuration, this would be CRM_MACHINE_ACCOUNT$
    • In a custom application pool identity configuration, this would be your custom app pool account
  • Make sure you have Administrator permissions on the CRM server
  • And - for sure - a recent backup available

Then execute the E-Mail Marketing setup and proceed as with a new installation.
